Introduction

AFD Postcode Evolution® for Microsoft Business Central provides instant UK address verification and lookup functionality directly within your ERP system. The solution offers several key benefits, including eliminating address data entry errors, speeding up customer and vendor onboarding, ensuring accurate deliveries, and maintaining compliance with postal standards.

Prerequisites

Before installing AFD Postcode Evolution® for Microsoft Business Central, ensure your system meets the following requirements:

  • Microsoft Business Central (GB)
    • AFD Software supports Microsoft Business Central version 26 or higher.
  • Free Evaluation Available
    • We provide a free evaluation that includes 10 complimentary UK address lookups so you can trial AFD’s services.
  • AFD Subscription
    • An active AFD Postcode Evolution® subscription with valid API credentials is required for full functionality.
  • System Administrator Access
    • Admin‑level permissions are needed to install the AFD’s extension and configure the necessary setup tables.
  • Internet Connectivity
    • Business Central must have internet access to communicate with AFD’s API services.

Installation

In Business Central search for “Extension Management”, then when the Installed Extensions list displays select “AppSource Gallery” from the ribbon.

Search for AFD

When the list opens, search for AFD. This can be viewed on AppSource to see more information about the app.

Install App

Click on the app in the list and select “Install App”.

Refresh Software

The app will be installed; the user will be directed to refresh the software before continuing to setup.

Verify Installation

The app will be installed; the user will be directed to refresh the software before continuing to setup.After installation, verify the extension is active:
  • Go to Extension Management
  • Confirm “AFD Postcode Integration” shows as Installed
  • Look for the new AFD menu item in the navigation

User Permissions

Once the app has been downloaded from the AppSource Gallery or manually uploaded, users who are likely to use the postcode lookup service need the following permission added to their permission sets either directly or to a group assigned to them:

Setup

Find Postcode Provider Configuration

In Business Central use the search function to find “Postcode provider configuration page”:

Select AFD Provider

Once the page opens drill into the ellipsis:Then select “AFD” and press OK.

Allow Permissions

The below will display, select “Allow Always“.

Accept Terms and Conditions

The user cannot progress with installation until the Terms and Conditions have been viewed. If the button is not clicked then the below message displays:Click the “Terms and Conditions” link to view them:

Configuration

Register for Full Access

Once the 10 free UK lookups have been used the following message will display, select “Register” to continue.

Enter Serial and Password

When the user selects “Register” the AFD Postcode configuration page will open where the serial and password can be entered to continue using the software.

Usage Guide

Quick Start: Finding an Address

Or follow these steps:

Open a Customer, Vendor, or Contact Card

Navigate to the relevant page where you want to enter an address.

Click the “Lookup address from Postcode” Button

Located in the Address section toolbar.

Enter Search Criteria

You can search by:
  • Postcode + House number
  • Partial postcode
  • Street name + town
  • Organisation name

Select from Results

Choose the correct address from the dropdown list.

Address Auto‑Fills

All address fields populate automatically with validated data.

Using the Customer Card

The service will work in all areas of Business Central where the standard postcode provider functionality is supported.

Lookup Address from Postcode

In the address section of the customer card select “Lookup address from Postcode“, as below:

Enter Postcode and Select Address

Enter the Post Code into the Postcode Search (or start typing the address) and a list of possible address matches will display, select the required address. Once the user presses OK the address fields on the contact card will be updated to match.


Search Methods

Postcode Lookup

Enter a full postcode (e.g., “EC2A 4NE”) to find all addresses at that postcode. Add house number/name for precise match.

Street Search

Enter street name and town to see all matching addresses. Useful when customer doesn’t know their postcode.

Organisation Search

Search by company name to find their registered address. Great for business customers!

International Addresses

Search for addresses outside the UK. Select country first, then enter address details.

App Updates

How to Update the App

AFD Postcode Evolution® for Microsoft Business Central is regularly updated with new features and improvements. To update:

  1. Go to Admin Centre and Manage Apps
  2. Find the AFD Postcode Integration app in the list
  3. If an update is available, you’ll see an “Update” option
  4. Click “Install Update” to install the latest version
  5. Refresh Business Central after the update completes

Automatic Update Notifications

Business Central will notify administrators when a new version of the AFD Postcode Integration is available. We recommend updating promptly to ensure you have the latest features and security updates.

Troubleshooting

“You must choose the getAddress.io Service” Message

Cause: Conflicting postcode extension installed

Solution:

Uninstall the “GetAddress.io UK Postcodes” extension. This can be done in two ways:

  • Option 1: From Installed Extensions in Business Central
  • Option 2: From Admin Centre → Environments → Manage Apps

After uninstalling the conflicting extension, restart Business Central and try again.

 “No Results Found” Error

Cause: Search criteria doesn’t match any records

Solution:

  • Check spelling of street/town name
  • Try partial postcode (e.g., “EC2A” instead of “EC2A 4NE”)
  • Use the street search instead of postcode
  • Try alternative spellings (e.g., “Rd” vs “Road”)

“API Connection Failed” Error

Cause: Unable to connect to AFD servers

Solution:

  • Verify your API credentials in AFD Setup
  • Check internet connectivity from Business Central server
  • Confirm your AFD subscription is active
  • Check firewall allows outbound HTTPS to api.afd.co.uk
  • Make sure “Allow HttpClient Requests” is enabled

Button Not Visible

Cause: Page not configured for AFD lookup

Solution:

  • Go to AFD → Setup → Page Configuration
  • Enable the relevant page(s)
  • Refresh the page in Business Central
  • Ensure you have the necessary permissions

“Invalid API Key” Error

Cause: API credentials are incorrect or expired

Solution:

  • Update credentials in AFD Setup page
  • Contact AFD support if key is still not working
