Flood Risk Data

AFD Software’s Address Lookup and Database Cleansing Solutions can now return or append property level flood risk data.

When an address is looked up at the point of entry the current and future risk is returned for both “Rivers and seas” and “Surface water” where available.

These four data points can also be appended to address data already held when cleansing address data.

Four Data Points, Four Risk Categories

Each address selected or cleansed will return:

  1. Rivers and seas: current chance of flooding from rivers and the sea.
  2. Rivers and seas with climate change: estimated risk of future flooding from rivers and the sea.
  3. Surface water: current chance of flooding from surface water.
  4. Surface water with climate change: estimated risk of future flooding from surface water.

The categories come from the Environment Agency’s 2024 National Flood Risk Assessment (NaFRA), which assesses risk down to 2m by 2m cells. The four risk categories are:

  1. High: each year, there is a chance of flooding of greater than 1 in 30 (3.3%).
  2. Medium: each year, there is a chance of flooding of between 1 in 30 (3.3%) and 1 in 100 (1%).
  3. Low: each year, there is a chance of flooding of between 1 in 100 (1%) and 1 in 1000 (0.1%).
  4. Very Low: each year, there is a chance of flooding of less than 1 in 1000 (0.1%).
